Bishop Turner’s relationship with women had a significant impact on his life and work. In addition to being married four times to powerful and memorable women, Turner’s interaction with Ms. Mary Elizabeth Harden and Mrs. Sara Sallie Ann Copeland Hughes speak through time. The following sections recount the lives of Harden and Hughes, and some of the ways their interactions with Bishop Turner shaped their lives, pressing their names into an archive relatively resistant to Black women’s presences.
