This exhibit hopes to unite the communities who embody the many legacies of Mary Ann Shadd Cary. Rather than splintering the way we remember her into the roles she played in the Black press, women\u2019s rights movements, educational and labor reform, and as an Afro-Canadian, we can honor her by bringing together these pieces. Shadd Cary\u2019s work makes it clear that all of the areas in which she strove for excellent and racial progress cannot be fragmented and scattered. The following pages highlight her work in some of these areas to reposition Shadd Cary as a fore-mother of the Black Club Women\u2019s Movement, an ancestor for communities of Black Canadians preserving and celebrating their histories, and an inspiration to Black women dancers at the University of Delaware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
