Florida Firsts and Black Reconstruction Political Formations

At the 1884 Florida Colored Convention, there were many men who could qualify as “Florida Firsts,” or Black politicians who were the first of their race to win a race or among the first to do so. In this exhibit we highlight three in particular who were Florida Firsts, or helped to bring about an institution that was a first of its kind.
