As a result of the political connections Rev. Jonathan Clarkson Gibbs developed at the 1868 Florida Constitutional Convention, he was appointed Florida’s first Black Cabinet member as Secretary of State in Governor Harrison Reed’s Administration. Secretary of State Gibbs was still an active in Colored Conventions circles despite having Congressman Josiah T. Walls read his speech to the 1871 Southern States Colored Convention Columbia, South Carolina.
